April 24 - 30, 2016Veterinary Receptionist Week 2016

We have set the last full week every April aside as Veterinary Receptionist Week. This time is used to spotlight the contributions made by the front desk staff. Receptionists are usually a pet owner's first & last point of contact during veterinary visits. The communication & care they provide is invaluable. Click here for a pdf of printable ideas for ways to celebrate Veterinary Receptionist Week.

Some may be on the way to another job in the veterinary hospital but some may find veterinary receptionist to be the career of for choice for them. And how lucky an animal hospital is when it can boast a loyal, hard-working, compassionate receptionist who has been with the company for years! A person like this will often play a big part in why clients return year after year, sometimes pet after pet.

Sharing the celebration time of the traditional Secretaries (aka Administrative Professionals) Week, we hereby designate the last full week of April each year as Veterinary Receptionist Week. This is a special time to celebrate the people who care for the front desk at animal hospitals & other veterinary facilities. Many are familiar & now celebrate Veterinary Technicians Week during the third week of October each year [see National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) or American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) for more info on Vet Tech Week], but it is important to have time set aside for the other portion of veterinary support staff... the receptionists. We see this a time also to foster strong bonds between the "front" & the "back" in veterinary offices as it allows for a happy counter-balance to Vet Tech Week.

December 2012 -  Veterinary Cancer Group is holding a food drive now through Dec 31st for Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. Their food programs help feed over 220,000 people in OC every month, and we hope to be able to help their cause a bit. Visit http://www.feedoc.org/ for more information about the organization.

There are fancy donation boxes in the lobbies of the Tustin and Culver City offices - please bring in non-perishable canned goods, dry food, and personal care items.

*Please do not donate expired items or anything in glass containers.*  We appreciate your joining us in this effort.

  • Most-needed food items:  Canned meats, fish, soup, fruits, and vegetables; Pasta, hot & cold cereal, Macaroni & cheese, Rice, Beans, Peanut butter
  • Most-needed Personal Care Items: Diapers, Toothpaste & toothbrushes, Toilet paper, Soap

November 2012 - Support Men's health and (human) cancer awareness! During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men's faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo's, these men raise vital awareness and funds for men's health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. Join or support Dr. Jarred Lyons in the fight against these diseases by growing a Mo of your own, visiting his personal Movember page, or making a donation to the cause.

June 2012 - Team Veterinary Cancer Group is registered to walk in this year's Relay for Life of Mission Viejo on June 2nd and 3rd.  All friends and families of our hospitals areinvited to join us at the Relay.  Visit our team page by clicking here.  "We Relay to raise awareness of cancer's effect on companion animals and their families. The American Cancer Society is making enormous strides and Relay for Life is our way of supporting their efforts."  The bar for fundraising has been set pretty high as last year Team VCG helped raise $15,000!  Can that be topped?  Well... Team VCG is trying!

Click on the image to the right for a printable info sheet for Team VCG's Relay for Life's Fundraising Night at Baskin Robbins.  Call the Orange County office at (949) 552-8274 if you'd like more information.

May 2012 - Veterinary Cancer Group is excited to be participating in this year's Bikers Against Cancer Ride! (Yes, this is a fundraiser for people with cancer!)  Check out the flyer attached here.  Please post it where people may see it.  A few of our doctors have said they will be in the ride (did you know we had bikers in our family?) and anyone is welcomed, and encouraged, to join the ride or just come out to the party at Irvine Lake. Please join us and be a part of this great cause!

February 2012 - One of our patients is in the news!  Family veterinarian Dr. Elaine Wexler-Mitchell shared this first-hand account of her own cat's experience with cancer treatment.  Shaka has been receiving care for the past 2 & 1/2 years, as detailed in this article in the Orange County Register.

January 2012 - Veterinary Cancer Group's own Dr. Avenelle Turner blogged about one of her patients and the article became featured on petmd.com!  Check out this link to read the story of Annie Sage and her battle against bladder cancer.

November 2011 - November marks the Seventh  Annual Pet Cancer Awareness Month.  It is the time of year set aside to focus on educating the public about cancer in our furry friends.  Visit the Veterinary Pet Insurance webpage highlighting Pet Cancer Awareness Month.  Team Veterinary Cancer Group, consisting of both staff, current and former clients, will be participating in this year's K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walk in Long Beach.  Checkout our events page for more info.  Please feel free to print out a pdf version of The 10 Signs of Pet Cancer Awareness & keep it handy for future reference.

August 2011 - Veterinary Cancer Group of Los Angeles staff headed out to the Pacific Design Center to attend Patterns for Paws.  The charity benefit and silent auction raised money for the Amanda Foundation (visit AmandaFoundation.org) and included celebrity guests, adoptable pets walking the runway, and good times...

May 2011 - Veterinary Cancer Group of Los Angeles' very own acupuncturist, Dr. Patrick Mahaney, is the new official celebrity veterinarian on TeddyHilton.com. TeddyHilton.com is the website for all things animal that was created by celebrity gossip spreader Perez Hilton. Dr. Mahaney enjoys educating the pet community about healthy living and the importance of preventive medicine and is now sharing information with the global community via Teddy's site.

May 14, 2011 - Veterinary Cancer Group and the American Cancer Society team up to raise money for the fight against cancer at Relay for Life. Team VCG will walk around the track at Orange High School for 24 hours, symbolizing the fact that cancer never sleeps, so neither will our fight against it.

March-April 2011 - Veterinary Cancer Group's own Dr. Mary Davis spent the last week of March in Bolivia on a humane society trip.  She was helping local citizens of a rural area with medical care for family pets.  In the past Dr. Davis has done things like spays, neuters, vaccines, and provided other basic veterinary care when she has ventured off on similar trips.  Most think of a little R&R or a favorite fun activity when we are able to steal some time away from the daily grind.  Dr. Mary Davis, on the other hand, is volunteering her time to assist pet owners and animals that would likely be very challenged to attain medical care.  Hats off to you, Mary!

March 2011 -Effective March 1, 2011 all three Veterinary Cancer Group locations will be donating 1% of each payment made using a debit card (with use of pin pad). The charity we have selected to be the recipient of these donated monies is the ACVIM Foundation, a non-profit organization funding and promoting research, education, advocacy, and service, all  leading toward their ultimate goal - healthier and longer lives for animals.
Paying with your debit card eliminates the hassle of needing to carry checks or cash, and nearly all consumers have a VISA and Mastercard in their wallet that doubles as a debit card. If you pay using the debit function and enter your PIN number on the private keypad, 1% of your total payment will be automatically set aside to aid this important organization.

September 2010 - Many of our doctors enjoyed an evening together recently at the annual Paws for Cures benefit. Celebrity guests, dinner, dancing, and silent & live auctions were all a part of the benefit that supports the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Foundation. The funds raised help to find cures for disease & illness in companion animals. This year's event was bigger and better than ever - both in terms of fundraising and fun! Visit the ACVIM's website to learn more about the Paws for Cures organization or to make a donation. Here are a couple of snapshots from the evening:

May 2010 - Veterinary Cancer Group joined in the battle against cancer that affects our human friends as well! As surely many who read this have, our staff members have had both furry and not-so-furry loved ones touched by cancer in their lives. At Veterinary Cancer Group, we understand the importance of continuing the fight against 'all things cancer'. Staff members, patient families, and other friends joined together on May 1-2, 2010 at Orange High School in The Relay for Life of Orange to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

The Team thanks our generous sponsors for their support...

September 2009 - Some of our staff were lucky enough to enjoy an evening featuring Celebrity Guests, Dinner, Dancing, and Silent & Live Auctions, while contributing to a good cause recently.  Paws for Cures is an annual Benefit to Find Cures for Disease & Illness in Companion Animals.  All proceeds benefit the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Foundation.  This year's event took place on Saturday, September 12, 2009 in Anaheim Hills and Veterinary Cancer Group was there.  Visit the ACVIM's website to learn more about this organization or to make a donation.  Read on for a great narrative from Laurie Shapiro, Veterinary Cancer Group Tustin's longtime Doctor's Assistant…

We entered the grand estate of hosts Cathy Wills and Dr. Andy Plisko on a plush red carpet.  After meeting our hosts, all the guests were enthusiastically greeted by special celebrity guest Tillman the Skateboarding Bulldog and a crowd of paparazzi!  Following the pawprint walk of fame led us to the beautiful pool and yard where drinks were served and silent auction goodies were on display to tempt the will. Who can refuse such beautiful baubles when the money goes to a good cause?  Then the Dock Dogs and Friends went to work!  Sweet friendly dogs worked the crowd while wearing pocketed vests to collect donations.  Who could resist!  Large Lucy the Newfoundland, Jitterbug the adorable pup and the petite dock diving Labrador girl all worked their tails off for a cause close to their hearts.  $55,000 was raised at last year's event.  I'm sure the addition of these compelling canine "beggars" will increase this year's donations immensely.

Soon the dinner bell sounded and we were whisked down the terrace to sumptuous star-lit alfresco dining. We were honored to meet our speakers Dr. Michael Davis of Oklahoma State University, the evening's honoree oncologist Dr. Brenda Phillips, and Chase's "Mom" Cera Reusser, the founder of Chase Away K-9 Cancer.  More silent auction items were bid upon and were followed by dancing and socializing with friends new and old to the music of G Band accompanied by honorary chairperson Ben Carey of Lifehouse.  It was a beautiful evening for a beautiful cause.

July 2009 - Veterinary Cancer Group took part in the American Spaniel Club's 33rd Annual Cocker Spaniel National.  Dr. Mona Rosenberg lectured to attendees about canine cancer.
